Light House is a major ‘poem-sculpture’ in glass specially commissioned for the new Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht HQ in Killarney in 2009. This large-scale work is a collaboration with the poet Derek Mahon. It is four metres high, weighs about two tons, and is made of fused-glass, within which Derek’s specially written poem is suspended. The font of the suspended poem is ‘American Typewriter’ which is the poet’s habitual font as he creates his work on his typewriter. The optical qualities of the poem within the layers of glass give a unique reading point for each person, varying according to their own height.
